I’m a graduate with a double first class honours in chemistry and mathematics from Keele University and have a PhD in chemistry from Stirling University. I’ve been working as a private tutor since 1998. I teach mathematics, chemistry, biology and physics at GCSE and A-level standard.

Approach

I generally teach online via Google Classrooms. I’ll ask pupils to do a past paper for their homework and then go through it the following week, marking it and then filling in any gaps in their knowledge.

I’ll start by trying to help pupils remember what they’ve learned by asking questions rather than telling them what to do. However, if they’ve forgotten something or haven’t yet been taught it, I’ll take them through it and ask them to do a few practice questions to make sure everything is clear.

I will also instil in every pupil the requirement that they try to be the best that they can be. Every pupil will be supplied with a bespoke programme detailing which topics will be covered and when. There is always a level of flexibility built into these programmes should certain topics need to be repeated.

I’ll have a chat with the student’s parents / guardians after the lesson to report back on progress. I will email any relevant material used in my lessons to them so they can print it out or save it to their favourites. These emails will then become a ready-made revision guide that pupils can look through in the run-up to their exams.
